We always seem to run out of them at the holiday table even though it feels like we cook more each time to avoid running out of onions. Heavens no!

So this year we cooked nine, yes nine, packages of onions. All different colors...white, yellow and purple. Very colorful indeed. All of these onions were fresh so therefore all of these onions needed to be peeled. Lots of peeling, but everyone is willing to chip in on this task despite the potential tears.

Here they are peeling away. (I was helping, but put my knife down to take the picture---what a photo op.)

Two full cookie trays of onions went into the oven to roast with a little olive oil, salt, pepper & fresh thyme. Yummy! One spoonful of onions was all that was left over. I think we might have finally found that right amount of onions for our family. Nine bags for 18 people---you do the math. And a hint...not everyone eats them. People actually make whole shawls out of lace...crazy! I am just terrible at it. Although I do like the way it is coming out...when I am not ripping back. I picked up a skein of 100% cashmere at Rhinebeck from Still River Mill in Connecticut. They had an example of a cute knitted lace hat (Buffalo Gal Lace Cap). Their hat was knit from buffalo fiber, but I wanted the greyer color and went with the cashmere instead.

This project which is only a quarter of the way started has required several life lines and the purchase of reading glasses. That's right...I went out and bought reading glasses (the inexpensive kind that are magnifiers) so I can stand some chance of seeing the stitches when I make a mistake. The bonus: The reading glasses have rhinestones!

It is hard to see in this picture but the holes (intentional holes) are coming along quite nicely. I just really have pay attention when working the lace repeat. And then count at the end of each row to be sure that I have the right number of stitches. Paranoid I know...but I have messed up so many times that I figure it is better to be safe than sorry.

I bought a sheep!

That's right I bought a sheep! It isn't a Shetland, or a Jacob, or a Blue-faced Leicester....it is stuffed! Fooled you! He is a stuffed hand puppet named, Baaah...ob. He was one of many things that I couldn't resist this past weekend at Rhinebeck (and for you knitting muggles, that is one of the largest fiber events in the area). We had a great time searching for fiber among the bales of hay.

My purchases fell into 3 categories: fiber, animals/smelly stuff & notions/etc.

I bought six skeins of Socks that Rock yarn (2 for a hat, 2 for mittens and 2 for socks), a skein of cashmere for a lacy hat, some merino embroidery thread and a mitten kit from Morehouse Farm.

Here is Baaah..ob my sheep along with the smelly stuff "Moth Beware" from Got Soap?. It actually smells quite nice which is good because everything that was in the same bag with it smells the same. I bought small wooden pins for blocking, but I really am going to steal a friend's idea to make knitting ball Christmas ornaments out of scrap yarn and two of theses pins to look like knitting needles. And then I bought a small original etching of asparagus (one of my favorite veggies) I really wanted to buy this print, but it was a bit out of my price range...there is always next year.

And Baaah..ob has already begun making pals with my cat Winston.

Yarn Harlot Fun

For those of you who A: enjoy crossword puzzles and B: like the Yarn Harlot...here is a little crossword to test your knowledge of knitting and Miss Stephanie Pearl-McPhee.

Crossword

So True...

A good friend sent me this postcard this week. A bunch of you asked for the recipe and I have finally got around to writing it down for you. Enjoy!

Mediterranean Layer Dip

You can use as many or as few layers as you want depending on your tastes!

Line a medium bowl with plastic wrap- it is better to use a wide based bowl if you have one

Blend in food processor ¾ bar of cream cheese, half a small tub of ricotta cheese, ¼ cup of parmesan cheese, salt & pepper to taste

Spread a third of cheese mixture into bottom of bowl

Spread ½ cup of olive tapenade over cheese mixture (I used a jar of pre-made from Trader Joe’s)

In food processor finely chop a jar of roasted red pepper (drain liquid) I found that the peppers were still a little too moist so you may want to let them drain in a coffee filter to get rid of more of the juice, then layer the chopped roasted red peppers onto top of the olive tapenade

Take a third of cheese mixture and mix into about ½ cup of basil pesto and spread onto pepper mixture

In food processor blend a jar of sun dried tomatoes with the oil (it becomes too pasty to spread without some of the oil) spread onto pesto mixture

Take remaining cheese mixture and spread on top of sun dried tomatoes

Let chill in frig for at least 1 hour & invert bowl onto serving plate and serve with bread or crackers

Summer Fun Part 3

Summer fun Maine style!

Way downeast style! In Roque Bluffs, ME. Where is that you ask? Here it is on the map. It is beautiful and in the middle of nowhere, but that is what makes it so relaxing. On our way up Coastal Route 1 we stopped at Wild Blueberry Land. It had always intrigued me...I mean it is a giant blueberry by the side of the road!! Well, it isn't really a giant blueberry. It is a geodesic dome painted blue complete with a fence of old round metal buoys painted blue like gigantic blueberries. Inside they carry everything Maine and blueberry related. Bet you didn't know about blueberry flavored dog biscuits. We picked up a wild blueberry pie on our way back to CT and they make a mean blueberry pie. Yummy!

We stay at my husband's family's camp when we are there and it is lovely. This year we have the added luxury of a hot shower and flush toilet. Hallelujah! I love flush toilets!

Time is spent doing whatever you want. I spent most of my time reading and knitting on the bluff. The view is gorgeous and you only see a few lobsta' boats all day long. It is so peaceful. Hera (our dog) has a great time taking in the smells and roaming free.

We also did some hiking on the "Bold Coast Trail" in Cutler, ME. It is a great hike along the craggy rock that defines the Maine coast. The views are spectacular and a bit scary. This is one place you do not want to get too close to the edge. It is a long way down.

I also enjoyed perusing the new yarn shop in Machias, ME the next town over. The Wooly Barn is a lovely little shop attached to one of the historic homes in the center of Machias. It is run by a young woman (about my age) and has only been open a few months. She has a good assortment of yarns and is increasing the amount of local yarns and products she sells. I bought some wooden needles made by local artisan, Al Mather , from East Machias, ME as well as some sock weight yarn from Done Roving in Charlotte, ME. I also got some downeast knitting goodies for my Snb's Holiday Gift Swap. Hmmm.

Summer Fun Part 2

This is summer fun NYC style. I love to go into the city, but my better half...not so much. So I got to go to visit my brother and his fiance by myself which is fine with me since I actually prefer going shopping and museum hopping by myself. Sad... I know.

I started out by fabric shopping at Purl Patchwork where I picked up two patterns--one Amy Butler pattern for a tote bag and a pattern for various pin cushions by Indigo Junction. I could have spent hours looking at all the fabrics. The store is small, but every inch of wall is covered with fabrics. It is a little dizzying. I ended up with fabric for my tote bag and some other fabrics I just liked. And I had to leave before I bought more. A very dangerous place.

Then I went to Habu Textiles. It took me little longer to find Habu...I walked up the street, down the street and back to the street sign to be sure I was on the right street. I felt a bit like a muggle trying to find the secret entrance to the Order of the Phoenix headquarters. It had to be here somewhere. I did find it eventually (after being an amusement to the construction workers). Small door, small numbers--just not what I was expecting. You go up in a elevator get off and kinda have to look down the hall before you see it. I wasn't sure I was in right place (or welcome) since the door was held open with a phone book and no one was in the first main room. I yelled out "Hello...hello" and a young Japanese woman said with an accent,"First time." I was thinking to myself (first time for what? I just want to look at the fibers...that's all). I responded, "Yes, this is my first time." and she proceeded to explain what she had available and how the purchasing worked. She was very pleasant and left me to poke around.

It was very simple and artsy. Bamboo baskets on the floor filled with all different fibers. In the next room, which is really just a hallway, samples of their yarns were held on wooden rods. I went specifically to get some of the sterling silver wire that they sell. I had seen it at workshop I took and I was intrigued. As someone who has spent time making jewelry using torches and hammers...knitted jewelry interests me. Maybe this could be the perfect marriage of two things I love. We will have to wait and see.

So I picked up my wire and also a skein of cotton which is very stiff and rough the texture interested me...I'm thinking it would make a good exfoliating cloth. No one was around so I had to yell for help (not a damsel in distress help, but I want to leave without stealing this stuff help).

Then I walked through Central Park as I headed over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the "Frank Stella on the Roof" sculpture exhibit. It was a lovely day to spend on the roof of the MET (I had never been up there before). You had great views of the city skyline as it stretched out of the Central Park landscape. I took in a mojito and some knitting on my Anastasia (never ending) sock and resisted the urge to yell..."STELLA, STELLA."

The next day I headed over to the Brooklyn Museum of art which had recently renovated a space to permanently exhibit Judy Chicago's "Dinner Party" (web tour of exhibit). For those of you not familiar with this work of art...it is an important feminist art piece from the the late 70's. I had never seen it before and it was quite stunning. The room was made to fit the triangular dining table and each place setting has a handmade "place mat/runner" and plate that relates to the woman/goddess it celebrates. Though I enjoyed seeing the exhibit I was disappointed that the audio tour to go with it was not working and they were all out of the brochures. I felt I would have been able to enjoy it more fully with more background info, but I guess there is always next time.

My brother, his fiance and I then headed over to the MOMA to see the Richard Serra exhibit, but it was "Free Friday at the MOMA" and there were way too many people so we decided we would go another time. I mean never ending lines of people all weaving up and down like a maze to make it look like you are nearing the front, but alas you have to turn and go towards the back again. Like at the amusement parks.

We struck out again when we tried to hit the Brooklyn General Store and it was closed when it was supposed to be open! We were totally bummed as we pressed our faces against the glass to peer inside at all the goodies that we couldn't touch. It looked really cool in there as we kept saying, "Oh look at that...did you see that?" We stopped in the cafe next door and inquired if someone would be back to let us into the marvelous store. But alas, the women who run the store are also midwives...babies were calling. Or screaming?

Summer Fun Part 1

Okay, so I have been remiss in my blog postings. Well...maybe downright neglectful. Anyway---I wanted to update ya'll on my summer adventures!

So this is the first of several installments.

I spent a good amount of time at the beach this summer including a very nice weekend with some of my fellow SnBers. Nothing quite like working on your tan with your knitting in hand.

What a lovely feeling to have one's toes in the sand and knitting in one's fingers. Life is good! Here I am working on my raspberry tunic top from Classic Elite's Summertime Knits booklet. It is knit in their Classic Silk yarn (a combo of cotton, silk and nylon) which knits up with a subtle nubby texture. I love the top, but I haven't taken any pictures yet. It is on the "to do" list.

May the "Farm" be with you.

Okay, I can be a little wacky sometimes...I'm not proud, but at least I'm honest. What an old lady she is! So...how much is that in dog years? The old wives tale says that 1 dog year= 7 human years. If that is correct then Hera is 56! She really is old, but she hasn't lost much of her spunk.

I stopped at the "barkery" for a special treat. Nicholas is known for her wild color combinations and funky patterning on garments. I had bought one on her books a while ago and loved her funky spin on color and pattern. When I saw she was having a workshop and book signing I jumped at the chance to learn these simple embellishing techniques.

The workshop was held in a cute coffeeshop next door to the Comstock Ferre building. We were asked to bring a 8" square of stockinette stitch which we would learn to embellish.

We learned all different types of stitches inlcuding: duplicate stitch, running stitch, chain stitch, lazy daisy, french knot, bar weaving, spider web, outline stitch, blanket stitch and others.

It is a fun and easy way to bring added color and pattern without having to carry along extra bobbins. They will be great to take a nap with (both the sweater-with the B in it and the pillows)!

So with mission accomplished I headed back to the main retail store and more specifically to the Lexie Barnes seconds. I got two mini bags--the larger to hold sock projects (currently holding my Morehouse Crinoid Shawl project) and a smaller one for notions. I also picked up a new tin of Knitter's Little Helper hand balm.

We then had a lovely late lunch at Viva Pasta Fresh. Which is a mucho yummy little restaurant that serves homemade pasta with delectable sauces and toppings. We're talking gooood! Too bad that the restaurant is so far away (or maybe that is a good thing). Here's the gang...had a great day ladies!

Uh oh!

I know I said I would finish my UFO's before starting a new project, but I have run into slight problem. Lack of yarn. It is not that I don't have any yarn. B would say I have plenty of yarn. So...if it isn't the lack of yarn...what is it?

It is that I can't get at the yarn. You see, this fall was really crazy. For those who know me you know that my Grandma stayed with us for a couple of months and were are many other things going on. So...what does this have to do with the yarn? Well, when we cleaned out the room where Grandma was going to stay (this is where this particular yarn was residing...I think I have yarn in every room...is that bad?) I moved said yarn to the "junk room" because we were working so fast and things got piled on it over the fall and holidays. You see my problem.

But that is okay because last night I decided this must be a sign that I should really be working on what I want to work on which is the lovely green shawl from Morehouse Farm. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to finish some of my UnFinished Objects.

I am starting with this baby jacket that was started for a friend's new baby.

The pattern was straight forward and I even had the exact yarn the pattern called for. The pattern is a Mac and Me pattern. The only catch---the baby came early! I lost interest and went onto other knitting adventures.

But, don't worry. I am back at it and luckily the baby was small to begin with and the jacket is knitting up larger than I thought. And these hats were fun to knit.

The first is a kit from Morehouse Farm that I bought on my last trip to Rhinebeck. http://www.morehousefarm.com/ Chocolate brown is becoming another of my favorite colors (what girl doesn't like chocolate!) and it looked cute with the pink. The flowers were fun to knit as well and were surprisingly easy. I decided to add the pearl buttons for a little something extra.

The fish bone hat is for my 10 year old cousin. It is knit from the Mission Falls 1824 "Just Kidding" patternbook. The yarn is nice and soft to knit with and superwash (we love our superwash). It comes in a rainbow of colors...just look at the colours! http://www.camillavalleyfarm.com/pics/mission/cottonbig.jpg

I was supposed to have it finished for Christmas Eve, but it didn't happen. I enjoyed the challenge of the intarsia fish bone pattern. It is the perfect way to learn something new. Small and one color! I really hope he likes the hat--if not I already have other takers.

Ooh la la!

Purl is the cutest little shop! What a guy! I love going to new yarn shops to see what things they have that I may never seen--oh the adventure of it all. So with the gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket we went in.

I bought a skein of 100% angora from France in the most beautiful lilac color. They had baby booties knit up in the angora from the "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" book by Joelle Hoverson. http://www.purlsoho.com/purl/our_books

I also purchased a magazine I can never find around here "Selvedge". I better check the package of old shingles to see what the dye lot is in case I need to call the company and find more.

E: Wow--that is cool. They call the color of shingles by dye lots. It is just like yarn!

B: Actually, they don't. They call them aggregate lots. I just thought if I used the term dye lot you would know what I was talking about.

E: Oh.

B: But I might need a few hanks of shingles. Hee. Hee.

E: Very funny.

I'm not sure if I should be ecstatic or offended? Here I thought my knittin' lingo was coming in handy and the rest of the world was following the brilliant vocab of knitters. But my bubble was burst and my hubby (knowing that all I think about is knitting) lowered the construction lingo so I could have some chance of comprehending.

Einstein

My Einstein coat is coming...oh so slowly... coming. She knitted a rectangle for the body and long skinny rectangles that she rolled into a spiral to make the sides. She sewed it all together and added a crocheted handle.
